I am so in awe of the person who can look at a pile of old doors and not only envision a new kitchen island but also execute it. So naturally when I came across Blake Sloane's salvaged designs I was totally impressed.
While researching Rebuilding Exchange last week, I came across the work of artist Blake Sloane and was immediately smitten. Blake creates beautiful and unique furniture and art using salvaged parts.
The butcher block top on the kitchen island in the first image above was produced using three old doors, cut up and pieced back together and then coated with resin. Blake also used an unwanted IKEA futon frame to create the island. The doorknob on the side of the table, from which you can hang a kitchen towel, is particularly brilliant!
The second kitchen island is made from an old ticket window as the base and an old door as the top. Both components were found in the alleys of Chicago, which is where many of Blake's supplies come from.
Upcycling an old suitcase into a medicine cabinet is totally one of those "why didn't I think of that?" pieces! Blake cut the front out of the suitcase and inserted a mirror and then created shelves and reinforced the inside with salvaged wood.
